Samsung's grasp on form and function impressed me most at Unpacked

Terminal updated: February 13th, 2020 at 16:17 UTC+01:00

This twelvemonth's Unpacked effect felt a niggling bit more special than it did in previous years, and that's mostly because Samsung seemed to accept a very clear picture of where it wants to push its smartphones next. Non simply that, merely the company appears to have achieved something slap-up at this year's Unpacked past mastering 2 blueprint philosophies at in one case: form over office and role over form.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a slap-up example of a smartphone'due south exterior design changing to accommodate certain functions. The prominent camera bump becomes a potent blueprint chemical element because of the underlying hardware that requires additional space. Not so much for the Galaxy S20 and S20+, both of which look a bit out of identify because their camera bumps seem unnecessary, or purely a design choice.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra might not be the most stylish-looking phone. But in that location is something inherently beautiful about a device'south function seeping through the outside design — or form — and Samsung's latest flagship introduced at Unpacked does that extremely well.

Both the Milky way S20 Ultra and Galaxy Z flip boss their corresponding niches

In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip is at the verbal contrary finish of the spectrum. Information technology follows a class over role pattern philosophy, meaning that information technology is willing to sacrifice sure specs and capabilities to accomplish its design goals. It doesn't have a crazy camera setup or the latest specs, but information technology is a marvel of engineering and mobile design.

Of course, there are elements of both philosophies in both of these devices. For case, the Galaxy Z Flip follows the function over form schoolhouse of thought when it comes to screen bezels, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra is not as industrial/rugged-looking as it could've been. It focuses on camera prowess and boasts periscope lenses, but it doesn't have a ridiculous DSLR-similar lens sticking out of the dorsum console. Information technology's a balancing act, and Samsung seems to have nailed it down to a tee, creating two very different devices that feel like they're the best in their respective niches.

Which arroyo is more valid? Form over function, or function over form?

Both, actually, and that's the big takeaway here. OEMs unremarkably follow one of two paths, but both design philosophies are perfectly valid in this industry and others. Samsung has outdone itself this year precisely because it somehow mastered these philosophies at the same fourth dimension without compromising one some other.

Regardless of which model you might adopt more, both the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S20 Ultra stand for Samsung'due south perfect balancing act between form and role. The Milky way S20 Ultra leans towards function while the Galaxy Z Flip embraces course, but neither device pushes to the extremes. Instead, they seem to follow a concise vision throughout, and I promise that Samsung can achieve this with other smartphone models every bit well.

Samsung'due south futurity suddenly looks more concise

Unpacked 2020 got me even more excited for the futurity. Samsung always offered customers tons of smartphone choices, but many of them sort of blend together. Some budget models brand little sense, to begin with, and too many similar choices can get meaningless.

This year'southward big event felt a little bit dissimilar; every bit if Samsung was finally over the experimental flagship and/or foldable phase and is at present committed to creating abominable and beautiful smartphones that tick all of the right boxes in their particular niches. It'south equally if the era of no-compromise has arrived in full strength; although to be fair, the Galaxy S20 and S20+ exercise exist and they feel a fleck more similar half measures compared to the S20 Ultra. Still, the choice between form and function is there, and subsequently Unpacked, it's clearer than ever.
