I just tried the first Apple Watch camera — here'due south what happened

Wristcam for Apple Watch

I wear my Apple Sentry 6 every 24-hour interval, but this week, I wore information technology a scrap differently. Instead of stretching a colour-matched Solo Loop over my paw, I strapped on Wristcam, the outset Apple-certified smart band with a born camera.

Wristcam has been on my radar for a few months now, promising the ability to plough the Apple Watch into a capable camera. For $299, Wristcam's in-strap component packs both world-facing (viii-megapixel) and cocky-facing (ii-megapixel) lenses you tin can control either with the ring's manual controls or with the watchOS app.

  • watchOS 8: Meridian five underrated features
  • Plus: Apple Picket seven leaks are boring — and that's a big trouble

I finally got one in to test out, and wore it to see whether it really comes in handy, and if it helps brand my Apple Sentinel more autonomous.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how the Apple Sentry could gain independence from the iPhone. While watchOS 8 is bringing new digital keys and then you could ditch your wallet, amidst other advancing updates, I nevertheless don't desire to go out domicile without my smartphone'southward cameras.

I was willing to attempt, though. Hither's what happened when I used Wristcam's Apple Watch camera for a twenty-four hours instead of my iPhone 12 Pro Max'south. And whether I'd practise it again.

Pet photography fabricated easy

My morning started at vii a.m. with a Cardinal Park walk with my dog, Steve. Fumbling Steve's ternion, my keys, vi.7-inch iPhone and sometimes a coffee, I usually refrain from taking pictures of my blackness lab while we're out and about. Rude, I know.

Meet more

Even when he's freed from his leash to run with other four-legged friends, recording video is difficult. Only this morning, I had a photographic camera strapped to me, so I didn't have to dig in my pocket for my phone and hazard losing sight of my canis familiaris. This is when I realized Wristcam felt a piddling like a GoPro, meaning I could capture activeness content while staying the moment.

What surprised me most in the morning was how comfy it felt despite it being much larger than all the best Apple Watch bands. The mesomorphic component doesn't seem ideal for a weight-lifting workout (plus Wristcam makes the Apple Picket feel heavier), but the silicone straps fared fine on my two-mile walk, even in Northeast'due south heat wave humidity.

And shockingly, zilch weird happened on my walk, only in New York City "you gotta meet to believe it" moments have identify all the time. I imagine the spycam on my wrist would be bully for those occasions, although I'll admit orienting it takes do. At first my photos and videos came out slanted, or with the subject field off-eye.

Take me out to the ball game

I assumed I would need to accuse Wristcam at some signal before my evening outing — a baseball game game — but at five p.m. information technology held well-nigh fifty% battery. As its own cocky-contained organisation, Wristcam pairs to Apple Watch via Bluetooth Depression Energy to sustain "all day" battery, and I found that spec holds up, although I didn't use information technology for the majority of my workday. It seems the battery drains much faster when the cameras are on.

As I got ready to get out for Yankee Stadium, I snapped a few selfies to ship to friends. Maybe I just have short arms, but it requires real wrist mobility to become the right angle. And even and then, I don't think I could fit some other person in frame. I suppose I could have Wristcam off and hold it further from my face in a compression, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

At the ballgame, I took a few photos over the heads of the folks sitting in front of me. But the stadium lights and massive scoreboard caused some blur. If I wanted a shut upwardly of the players, crispy details of my craven tenders or a good shot of me side by side to the field, I would've used my iPhone.

Would I clothing Wristcam regularly?

Upon arriving dwelling house from the game, I finally took Wristcam off for my Apple Watch to accuse earlier bed, since I commonly wear it overnight for slumber tracking. For the same reason, information technology was fourth dimension to swap out my photographic camera-laden strap for my slim and reliable 'ole Solo Loop.

So would I bandy information technology out for Wristcam again in the morning? I tin can think of several specific instances when having Wristcam would let me capture moments that I'd otherwise miss while reaching for my iPhone. I loved information technology for walking my dog, for instance.

But as much fun every bit I had showing it off to young man fans in line for the Yankees game, I didn't leave with quality photos. My iPhone's camera is superior, so Wristcam isn't an everyday accessory, at to the lowest degree not for me. Until Apple adds a native photographic camera to Apple tree Scout, though, Wristcam provides an impressive solution for snapping photos apace and sans-smartphone.
